Lower West Branch River, Katahdin Outfitters, Millinocket, Maine
The Lower West Branch offers easy access for camping and fishing groups. The Golden Road is a primary land management road used for the transportation of forest products and runs parallel to the river for 10 miles from Abol to Ripogenous Dam. Ripogenous to Big Eddy contains very severe rapids and is runable by only an experienced team in a whitewater craft.

Big Eddy to Ambajesus Lake is mixed flat water and rapids with several falls and heavy stretches of rapids. Canoe groups who wish to run the Lower West Branch should be experienced and use extreme caution due to the many rapids and falls. Several portages are also required. For further information please refer to the AMC Canoe Guide.
